Production of Ignition was part of Electronic Arts's efforts at creating both a wider media franchise around Dead Space, and as part of a new marketing strategy of using small standalone video games to promote larger titles. The gameplay combines hacking minigames with motion comic-style cutscenes featuring multiple story paths. The player takes the role of Franco Delille, an engineer who witnesses and navigates round the initial outbreak of the hostile alien Necromorphs. It is set on the Sprawl, a city built upon the remains of the moon Titan. A spin-off of the Dead Space series, it serves as a prequel to 2011's Dead Space 2. It was published by Electronic Arts for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Dead Space 2 hits shelves on January 25.Dead Space Ignition is a 2010 action puzzle video game co-developed by Visceral Games and Sumo Digital. So, if you're going to play Dead Space 2 anyway, it's kind of a no-brainer.ĭead Space Ignition is available October 12 (tomorrow) on PlayStation Network, and October 13 on Xbox Live Arcade. However, those who play through Ignition will get more than a story that links the first and second Dead Space titles they will also unlock a hacker suit that Isaac will be able to use in Dead Space 2.
If you'd rather not pre-order Dead Space 2 for some reason, you can buy Ignition as a standalone game for about $5. However, whether or not Ignition actually qualifies as "Necromorph action" is debatable, since the game is basically a series of minigames linked together by comic book-style plot interludes. "Dead Space fans are hungry for more Necromorph action and we’re thrilled that they don’t have to wait until January to get their fix," says Steve Patoutsis, executive producer for the Dead Space frachise, in an EA press release.
Dead Space Ignition hits XBLA and PSN this week, and if you pre-order Dead Space 2 at participating retailers, you'll get a code that will allow to get the downloadable companion title for free.
